I took a picture of the moon with my phone, and surprisingly, it showed the surface of the moon.

Last year, I would have had more time to spare, but since the end of last year, I’ve been swamped with work, and I haven’t been able to take pictures of the ground, let alone celestial objects. The only thing I see every day is my computer display. However, I always have my smartphone in my pocket, so I can quickly take out my phone and take snapshots. Smartphones are great, aren’t they?

When I looked at the bright eastern sky, I saw the moon low in the sky. It was so big that I could see the rabbit on the moon with the naked eye. I wondered how it would look like, so I decided to try taking a picture of it.

I used the telephoto side of the Galaxy and set the digital zoom to 10x (I’m not sure where they got the 10x from). I could see that the vibration control was working, and the unique slippery movement of the vibration control mechanism kept the camera from shaking. In a bright sky, the difference in brightness between the moon and the sky is small, so the moon is less likely to be blown out. I did what my phone told me to do and tweaked the exposure a bit, but this is the shot I took without thinking. You can see the ambience of the moon in this shot. But the leaves on the trees look jagged, which can’t be helped with 10x digital zoom (no cropping).

After some time, I took another shot of the moon in a sky that was beginning to darken. It was interesting to observe the moon’s surface more than I thought it would be, though the noise on the contours was unsightly. But it is not more than an evidence photo.

The telephoto lenses that come with smartphones are generally around 60mm (35mm equivalent) or so. My phone is equivalent to 52mm, which is about the same as a standard lens on a DSLR or mirrorless phone. For high-end smartphones, OPPO’s Reno 10x zoom is 130mm and HUAWEI P30 Pro is 125mm. The latest Sony Xperia 1 III is 105mm.

The latest Sony Xperia 1 III is 105mm. If you want to capture the pattern of the moon’s surface, you need a 200mm conversion. There was also an example on a blog of a moon shot using an external telephoto lens for smartphones. The image was certainly large, but the aberrations were so severe that it was far from being suitable for daily use as a casual astronomical lens.

I wonder how the Andromeda Galaxy, which is said to have a visual diameter five times that of the moon, would look like on a smartphone, but it would probably require an equatorial mount and a lot of work to introduce and align the polar axis. Even if the time comes when we can take DSO pictures with a smartphone, it seems to be a long way off, and there seems to be no need for it in the first place.

    Busy,aren’t you?
